Where my love for retail began....
I travelled on and off for a year when I was 18 and based myself in London. It was a magical time, the culture, sights and smells of other countries took my breath away. I backpacked through Africa, went on safari, rode horseback around the pyramids in Egypt and sailed up the Nile in a felucca. I skied the Austrian and Swiss Alps, swam in the turquoise waters of Greece, stood at the landing of the Anzacs at Gallipoli. The architecture in Europe amazed and inspired me. I felt connected to all people of all races and loved learning about their culture and their lives.
I returned home before my 20th birthday and started to work in the family's furniture business, Wharf Furniture Warehouse. I stayed for 15yrs, learning the ins and outs of retail, about the different fabrics and timbers and grew a fascination for design, but mostly, I loved connecting with my customers everyday. When I left the family business, it was time to go out on my own and create a retail space that felt like home to me. My little store, Wanderlust for Women was opened 5mths later. It was travel inspired, with treasures from around the globe. It didn't feel like work to me, it was my passion to source interesting wares and connecting with my customers once again. After 7yrs of trade, I grew restless again for a new adventure , and moved my son and I to Melbourne for a year then to Sydneys Eastern Suburbs for a couple of years. When I returned to Newcastle, I knew the only thing I wanted to do, was to create another retail space for all my treasures to be sold and to reconnect with my local community again. Then and there, the Wandering Peacock was born.
I still travel regularly, and am still in awe of the magnificence of far away lands and it people. India has been a favourite over the years, which reflects in the treasures I sell in store.
I hope you can join me on this new journey into the digital world, where I can bring a little of my store into your home.
Much love, Karina xo
